Explore metal as a canvas for drawing and etching! 

AGES:

4 and up

INGREDIENTS:  

  • Catering trays or disposable baking trays, available at grocery stores

  • Permanent markers 

  • Etching tool (chopsticks, wooden stylus, or other gently pointed object will do) 

INSTRUCTIONS: 

  1. Etch on metal by gently pushing your tool of choice against it. 

  2. Use permanent markers to embellish your design.

  3. Combine both approaches and try coloring over the etched lines. 

Shadow Puppets

AGES:

4 and up  

INGREDIENTS: 

Heavy paper  

Straws or sticks  

Scissors and hole punch  

Brass paper fasteners  

Tape or string  

White sheet, desk lamp, and table  

INSTRUCTIONS:  

  1. Draw the body of your puppet on paper. Cut out each body part separately.

  2. Hole-­punch the spot where body parts connect. Use fasteners to link the parts together.

  3. Tape the straw or sticks to the hands and feet of your puppet.

  4. Create your screen by taping your sheet up. Place table and lamp behind the sheet.

  5. Now put on a show!  

DIY Shakers

AGES:

4 and up

INGREDIENTS:  

Container with a tight lid  

Beans, popcorn kernels, rice  

Tissue paper or construction paper  

Markers, sequins, ribbon  

Glue  

Scissors  

INSTRUCTIONS:  

  1. Fill your container with a variety of beans, seeds, and rice. Close and test out the sound. Try adding or taking out a few beans for a different sound.

  2. Cut construction and tissue paper in small confetti size pieces.

  3. Decorate your shaker by gluing on the paper confetti, sequins, and ribbon.

  4. Once dry, shake your shaker! Put on a show, play along with your favorite tunes, or make up your own song. 

Cardboard Robots

INGREDIENTS:  

Various cardboard boxes, paper tubes, and other recycled materials  

Glue dots, glue sticks, or tacky glue in cups with popsicle sticks   

Scissors  

Permanent markers  

Shiny paper, construction paper, or tin foil  

INSTRUCTIONS: 

  1. Build your robot! Use or cut slits and holes to attach arms, legs, tubes or rollers. Glue on a head, use bottle caps for gears, an “on/off” switch, etc.

  2. Use paper and markers to decorate your robot.

  3. Bring the robot to life with sound effects and stories.  

Make a New Friend

INGREDIENTS: 

Household item (duster, rock, sock, etc.)  

Googly eyes  

Tacky glue  

Odds and ends (caps, yarn, puff balls, fabric scraps) 

INSTRUCTIONS:  

  1. Glue on googly eyes with tacky glue.

  2. Decorate your new friend any way you want!

  3. Once your new friend has dried, give your friend a name, go on an adventure, make up a story, sing a song, or put on a puppet show! 

Paper Structures

INGREDIENTS:  

Paper straws 

Masking tape

Cardboard square  

Construction paper  

Fan 

INSTRUCTIONS:  

  1. Use the cardboard square as a base.

  2. Construct the frame of building by taping straws to the base and to each other. 

  3. Try attaching paper “walls” using tape.

  4. Experiment! Try blowing your building with a fan. Can it withstand the wind? How tall can you make your building without it falling over? 

Pop Ups

INGREDIENTS:

Construction paper  

Scrap paper  

Markers or crayons  

Ruler  

Scissors and glue  

INSTRUCTIONS:  

  1. From the construction paper, cut out a large card and fold it in half.

  2. On the seam, cut 2 slits (around 1-­‐2 inches deep; 1 inch apart.)

  3. Open up the card. The area that you cut will be where you add the card’s pop up feature.

  4. Cut out your pop up object and glue it on the cut part of the card.

  5. Decorate your card for someone special—maybe even plan to mail it to that person. 

Story Stones

INGREDIENTS:  

Smooth rocks (wash off any sand or dirt)  

Permanent markers  

Scraps of paper  

Scissors  

Mod Podge and paint brush, or spray acrylic sealant  

INSTRUCTIONS:  

  1. Choose a stone. Decide if you want to make it a character or a setting stone.

  2. For character stones, use the markers and/or paper scraps to depict a person, animal, alien, or any other character you can think of on your rock.

  3. Do the same for setting stones. Think of the location where your story might take place. Is it the playground? The forest? Outer space?

  4. Spray completed stone with acrylic or brush with Mod Podge. After they dry it’s time to bring your story to life! 

Neighborhood Blocks

INGREDIENTS:  

Paper  

Tools for drawing or painting  

Tape and scissors  

Variety of boxes or wooden blocks  

INSTRUCTIONS:  

  1. Go on a neighborhood walk together. Notice the buildings and places that are in your community, or even snap a few pics to reference when you get home.

  2. After the walk, draw pictures of the places in your community with your child.

  3. Tape the drawings on the boxes or blocks.

  4. Play in and with the Block Neighborhood.
