Glitter Jars: Your New Parenting BFF

Chicago Children’s Museum Lead Arts Educator Liz Rosenberg admires her emotional glitter jars and how they promote mindfulness.

Stress, especially in the time of COVID-19, is incredibly challenging to understand, and even harder to manage—which is why Lead Art Educator Liz Rosenberg has created this week’s incredible at home activity: Glitter Jars.

This is the kind of at home art activity for children that covers a ton of ground: It’s simple, fun, and chances are you already have all the ingredients to make it happen. But despite its simplicity, it’s a powerful learning tool for your kids. They’ll see what happens when you mix oil and water. They’ll learn what Alka Seltzer does in water. They’ll be able to think about how their brains manage emotions and stress, and how they can sit with and meditate on their own powerful emotions.

Plus, once you’re finished, you’ll have an incredible tool to help your littles practice mindfulness, learn about their emotions, and continue on their way to being healthy, happy kiddos!

What you’ll need:

A jar with a lid.

Water.

Vegetable or mineral oil

Something colorful to add—we love glitter or food coloring.

Alka seltzer (trust us—this part is important).
