At Home Activity: Alphabet Scavenger Hunt

An apple, a baseball, a cup, and a rubber ducky with the first letters of each word underneath: A, B, C, D.

Gimme an A.

Gimme a B.

Gimme a C.

What does that spell?

Some quiet time for you while your little one is actively engaged in high value, literacy building play.

Today’s at home activity lets your children show off their literacy skills by finding items beginning with every letter of the alphabet. So explain the rules, maybe provide an example, and let them explore your space to find each object.

And while they do, take a minute to sip some coffee, look out the window, or even just stare at the wall for a little bit.

Alphabet Scavenger Hunt

Goals

  • Become more aware of what’s around you

  • Reinforce literacy skills

Children will:

  • Find an object that begins with each letter of the alphabet

  • Share findings

What you’ll need:

  • A place to gather

  • Optional: paper and pencils

How to:

  • Talk about the rules for your game: “We need to find one thing for each letter of the alphabet—something in our house or even something we can see out the window.”

  • For younger children: Call out each letter and work together to find something that starts with that letter.

  • For older children: Write the letters on a piece of paper. Split up and hunt for something for each of the letters! Write down your finds if they can’t be moved (like a mattress or couch).

  • Once you’re done, come back as a group to share your finds. How many letters were you able to find something for? What letters were the trickiest?

Variation:

Do a color scavenger hunt. See if you can find an object for each color of the rainbow!
