Storyland: A Trip Through Childhood Favorites™

In Storyland: A Trip Through Childhood Favorites™ books come alive and pave the pathway for a love of reading in children at every age. As littles embark on a journey through beloved childhood books, Storyland meets them where they are through hands-on experiences at every developmental stage. From avid readers to early talkers, Storyland uses nostalgic classics and newfound favorites to lay the groundwork of early literacy and lifelong learning.

Did you know?
There are six essential pre-reading skills that your child can start learning from birth! The books in Storyland highlight each of these skills through interactive experiences and dramatic play.

  1. Print Motivation: Enjoy and take interest in books and reading.
After your visit, share your favorite parts of each book from the exhibit! Discover new books to read and find time to read together.

  2. Print Awareness: Notice print and symbols in the world.
    The Snowy Day
welcomes visitors to explore Peter’s neighborhood after a fresh snowfall through wintry words.

  3. Letter Knowledge: Identify letters by shape, name and sound.
    Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
encourages children to point out letters and shapes.

  4. Narrative Skills: Understand, tell and re-tell stories.
Children have the opportunity to read a book to Mouse during the If You Give a Mouse a Cookie portion of the exhibit. This gives children the chance to imagine, create, and tell their own story.

  5. Vocabulary: Recognize, understand and use words to describe objects and feelings.
Vocabulary is learned all day, every day! As children explore this exhibit they will hear new words and learn how and when they are used.

  6. Phonological Awareness: Listen to and play with the smaller sounds and rhythms in words and sentences.
    Tuesday
makes children aware of the sounds around them. Hear the sounds of applause, laughing, a radio, and frogs!
