Playing With Numbers (PWN)
Designed by Chicago Children’s Museum’s education experts in 2012, Playing with Numbers (PWN) provides teachers with engaging instructional strategies to introduce, reinforce, and deepen understanding of grade-level math concepts through innovative classroom activities.
Playing with Numbers (PWN) is a professional development program for educators that’s all about early math. The series of sessions focuses on foundational concepts in mathematical thinking: number sense, base ten, operations, geometry, measurement and data. PWN helps bridge the gap between formal learning environments (such as school classrooms) and informal learning environments (such as our museum exhibits). Through hands-on activities and real-world experiences, PWN extends our mission of creating a community where play and learning connect by demonstrating the academic and social value of play-based math instruction.
The content of PWN is based on mathematical principles—not a specific curriculum—and is aligned to Common Core Standards. The ideas and activities from this program can find a place in your scope and sequence no matter what math program you use.
