Dr. Martin Luther King Day

Join us for our celebration of Dr. King and his legacy at Chicago Children’s Museum through art activities, storytelling, and reflection.

  • 10:00 am - 4:00 pm: Visit our story lounge on Floor 2 to peruse children's books on the civil rights movement, race, and identity. Explore resources to help you have conversations with your children about race.

  • 10:00 am - 4:00 pm: Design your own Dr. King Day badge on Floor 2 to commemorate the holiday. Wear it proudly and let the world know what MLK Day means to you.   

  • 10:30 am - 4:00 pm: Join us for print-making with visiting artist and educator Derek Moore! Littles can explore printmaking and create messages of hope and action inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ages 4 and up.

 

If you cannot make it in person, we have digital resources available to encourage reflection and conversation at home with your littles. Take some time to watch our CCM friends read about the contributions Dr. King, Rosa Parks, and Ruby Bridges have made to bringing fairness to public spaces and classrooms across the nation, as well as African American Inventors who have contributed to our everyday lives.

The book, Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is read by a leader at Chicago Children’s Museum, Jeff Perry. Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, was written by Doreen Rappaport, illustrated by Bryan Collier, and published by Hyperion Books for Children.

The book Rosa, is read by CCM friend, Oliva Porter. Rosa was written by Nikki Giovanni, illustrated by Bryan Collier, and published by Henry Holt and Co.
