Circusville: Play Under the Big Top

Only at Chicago Children’s Museum, now through September 15

Come one, come all! Step right up and join the circus... This circ-tacular experience introduces littles to life under the big top for over-the-top play! They can choose to be the star of the show, take on the role of ticket taker, acrobat, hot dog vendor and more. In Circusville, every role lets littles express themselves, unleash their imaginations, explore their skills, embrace new challenges and shine!

Circusville is made possible by a generous gift from the Pritzker Pucker Family Foundation.

How Adults Can Support Playful Learning in Circusville

  • Take cues from the child on how they want you to join their play: Practice a new skill with them in the backstage area? Help them put on a costume? Play the role of customer at the concession stand while they take the order? In each scenario, help carry the scene forward and expand conversation. What’s the name of your character? What flavors of ice cream are you selling here? When will the performance begin?

  • Be a supportive observer. If a child chooses to put on a performance, watch their show and respond to their actions and expressions. Wow! What a balancing act! You sure were a funny clown! I love the music you selected for that performance! Share in and celebrate your children’s explorations and accomplishments.

  • Don’t hesitate to play too! Put on a costume element, try your hand at juggling, or twirl around with a “ring of fire.” In the world of Circusville, anyone of any age can play a role and help bring the circus to life.
